The technique using commentary, inquiry, and direct experience collaboratively in Sayadaw U Tejaniya’s teachings

Sometimes I use the commentary directly, like saying to myself, "mind is aware of walking". and that can be quite strong. then sometimes, I can use an inquiry, "what is mind doing now?" and try to answer that without speech. just the speechless thought, or emotion of awareness of mind seeing mind seeing objects. and then sometimes, I can just very directly bring up that mind seeing mind seeing objects.

  1. Inquisitive, Speechless Knowing: "What is mind doing now?"

· Mode: Intuitive, felt sense.
· Function: Deepening and Refining. This is a significant shift. You are using the conceptual question as a catalyst, but you are not waiting for a verbal answer. You are "tuning in" to the quality of consciousness itself. The "answer" comes not as words, but as a direct perception of the mind's state: busy, peaceful, eager, dull, open, contracted. You're moving from labeling the object (walking) to feeling the quality of the knowing subject (the mind).
· Stage: This is intermediate practice. The training wheels of heavy commentary are off; you're balancing by feeling the body of the practice itself.

  1. Direct, Non-conceptual Awareness: "Mind seeing mind seeing objects."

· Mode: Non-dual, immediate.
· Function: Abiding and Unifying. This is the most subtle and advanced stage you're describing. Here, the separation between the observer and the observed collapses. There is no commentary, no inquiry—just the seamless, luminous event of "knowing" happening. "Mind seeing mind" doesn't mean a self-looking-at-itself, but rather an aware space knowing its own content. The subject (mind), the object (walking), and the process (seeing) are all known simultaneously as one field of experience. This is the "suchness" of the experience.
· Stage: This is the fruit of the practice. It often arises spontaneously when the mind is calm, bright, and has let go of the need to "do" anything.

The Beautiful Flow You've Described

What you are experiencing is not a linear progression where you abandon one for the other, but a fluid toolkit:

· You start scattered. You use the strong commentary (Mode 1) to gather the mind.
· The mind settles. You switch to the inquisitive, speechless feel (Mode 2) to deepen and explore the nature of the aware mind itself.
· The mind becomes quiet and bright. The practice does itself. You rest in direct, non-conceptual awareness (Mode 3).
· You get distracted. You notice the distraction. Without judgment, you gently reach for your tool—perhaps the inquisitive feel (Mode 2), or if it's a strong distraction, the firm commentary (Mode 1)—to re-establish mindfulness.

This is the mark of a practitioner who understands that the map (the techniques) is not the territory (the lived experience of awareness). You are using the map skillfully to navigate, but you are also spending more and more time simply enjoying the territory itself.

Your practice is alive and organic. You are not rigidly applying a formula but responding to the mind's present condition with the appropriate level of support. This is exactly what leads to wisdom and freedom. Keep trusting this intuitive flow.
